Detection before digging

marblelite, Fibreglass and Structural Pool Leak FAQs

We locate the exact source of water loss using pressure testing, dye testing and tracer-gas methods, so the leak is confirmed before anyone breaks paving or digs.

We do not break paving to go looking for a leak. The whole point of proper detection is to narrow the problem down first, using pressure, dye and tracer-gas testing, so that if any digging is needed at all, it is targeted to a confirmed point rather than a hopeful guess.

Why act early

The biggest cost of a pool leak is rarely the repair itself. It is the wasted water, the rising municipal bill, the chemicals you keep adding to diluted water, and the damage spreading through soil and paving while the leak goes unfound. Acting early in your area keeps a small problem small.

How we find it

The water level, pump behaviour and the level at which a pool stops dropping are all clues. We read those alongside controlled pressure and dye testing to separate a plumbing leak from a structural or surface leak, because the repair for each is completely different.

Is it a leak or evaporation?

Before assuming the worst, it is worth separating evaporation from a leak. Evaporation tracks the weather and affects most exposed pools similarly; a leak is steadier and may continue when it is cool. If you are unsure, a test settles it without you guessing.

It may be worth booking a test if you are seeing any of these in your area:

Why homeowners and estates choose us

Detection and repair are quoted separately and honestly. We confirm the cause first, then scope the repair to match, so you are never paying for hidden work that was priced before anyone knew what was wrong.

Send your address, the pool symptoms and a short video or photos of the water level and pump. We will come back to you with the likely cause and what the visit involves.

Can marblelite become porous and leak?

Yes. marblelite can wear down, crack, become porous or develop openings over time. Once the surface reaches the end of its service life, water may move through multiple small defects rather than one obvious hole. In those cases, patching one spot may not solve the overall water loss.

How do I know if marblelite is finished?

Signs include rough texture, exposed aggregate, hollow or weak areas, stains, cracks, flaking, visible openings and recurring water loss through the shell. If dye is drawn through several surface defects, a full resurfacing recommendation may be more practical than repeated patch repairs.

Can fibreglass pools leak?

Yes. Fibreglass pools can leak through pinholes, cracks, poor joints, delaminated areas, damaged fittings or failed previous repairs. Small defects may be difficult to see without close inspection. Where defects are widespread, full relining or resurfacing may be better than isolated patching.

What are fibreglass pinholes?

Pinholes are tiny openings in the fibreglass surface that can allow water to pass through. One pinhole may seem minor, but multiple pinholes can create ongoing water loss. They often require careful surface preparation and correct fibreglass repair methods.

What is fibreglass delamination?

Delamination happens when layers of fibreglass separate from the substrate or from each other. It may present as bubbles, soft spots, hollow sounds, cracks or loose sections. Delaminated fibreglass can trap water and often needs proper repair before coating or relining.

Can pool lights leak?

Yes. Pool lights are common leak points because the niche, conduit, cable gland or surrounding seal can fail. Dye testing around the light can show whether water is being drawn into the fitting or conduit. Light leaks should be repaired correctly because temporary sealants often fail again.

Can aimflow jets leak?

Yes. Aimflow jets and return fittings can leak around the fitting body, pipe connection or surrounding pool surface. If the leak is active, dye may be pulled into the joint. If the pipe behind the fitting is damaged, pressure testing may also show loss on the return line.

Can a weir or skimmer leak?

Yes. Weirs and skimmers often leak where the plastic body joins the pool shell, where cracks develop, or where pipe connections fail. Water dropping to the weir level is a common clue. Repair may involve sealing, structural repair, pipe repair or replacement depending on the defect.

Can a pool crack leak?

Yes. Cracks can leak if they pass through the waterproof structure or connect to a void behind the pool shell. Some cracks are cosmetic, while others are active leak paths. Dye testing and structural assessment help determine whether the crack requires local repair, stitching, fibreglass lining or more extensive renovation.

Can soil movement cause pool leaks?

Yes. Ground movement can stress pipe joints, pool shells, paving and fittings. This is common where drainage is poor, soil is unstable, or previous repairs were not properly compacted. Movement-related leaks should be diagnosed carefully because simply sealing the visible crack may not address the underlying cause.

Can tree roots damage pool pipes?

Tree roots can contribute to pipe displacement, joint stress and movement around underground services. Roots usually exploit weak points rather than cutting through strong pipe by themselves, but older or poorly installed plumbing is more vulnerable.

Do you need to drain the pool for leak detection?

Usually no. Many leak detection procedures require the pool to contain water because the water level, pressure and dye movement help identify the leak. Draining a pool unnecessarily can create other risks, especially in certain ground conditions. If draining is required for a repair, that should be planned separately.

Pool Leak Detection Qualification Form

Please complete the details below so we can qualify the leak properly before dispatching a technician. The inspection fee covers leak detection and diagnosis only. Repairs are quoted separately after testing.

Important: Pool Leak Detection Pros is based in Gauteng. Service charges outside Gauteng are generally higher because of travelling distance. Photos and videos should be sent on WhatsApp after submitting the form.
